Consultation Express was started in 1993 as a straightforward and low
cost means of screening patients with spine problems in the same way
that screening for scoliosis and tuberculosis have been done in the past. The Consultation Express process involves the filling out
a questionnaire and submitting this with a recent accompanying MRI
imaging study to be reviewed by an experienced and qualified spine specialist.
There is presently a high level of concern regarding the all too
frequent recommendations being made for multi-level instrumented fusion surgery as a means of treating chronic low back pain due to multilevel disc degeneration, most commonly secondary to genetic factors.
Due to the considerations outlined above there has been increasing
interest in use of the Consultation Express service. This program is intended only for patients who have not previously had spinal surgery. Much of the programs success has been in eliminating the need for spinal surgery. Both Orthopedic and Neurosurgical Spine Specialists are available to perform this review process and following it a written report is e-mailed or faxed. The MRI study can be forwarded as hard
copy film, CD, or in other digital format. If the radiologic
report is available forwarding this is helpful (but not required).
